Intro
There is a lot written on the history of genetic reading, editing, and synthesis, but not much has been written on the quantitative modeling of biology. This is changing rapidly. As a programmer, modeling creates an interface for me to plug a sensor into a biological source, process signal, model within the context of whatever it is that I am observing, and recognize patterns.
I can then create products for people based on these insights. Much like Citadel with digital finance in the 80s/90s, Amazon in the 90s/00s, SpaceX in the 00s/10s, and Colossal Biosciences today, all creating new product lines for customers based on data retrieved from new frontiers pushed, and further explored. These, paired with an incentivized business model, recursively push the boundaries of the available technologies that capture the data. The flywheel becomes centered around new data acquisition, with the business model + product collecting the data as just vehicles for the new information, enabling further invention for consumers, …, etc.
